In early 2011, Mayor Powers, along with members of the Hastings City Council, the Board of Public Works, and the Hastings Economic Development Corporation, started discussions pertaining to the creation of a local economic development fund for business and industry. The concept of such a fund is certainly not a new idea, as more than 60 communities around Nebraska currently devote a portion of their local sales or property tax to economic development.

I'm sure we've all had complaints in one way or another about our local health care. From the initial call to schedule an appointment to the length of time in the waiting room to the doctor's bedside manner, we've all been frustrated at some point. It comes with the territory. But after this past month, I am still grateful for the “small town” atmosphere that is generally found with our providers.

The first time I wrote for the Hword I wrote about my impression of Hastings when I arrived as a perspective (and later on an enrolled) student. That was a LONG time ago, over 20 years in fact. Lately I've been stepping back and taking a look at Hastings and the surrounding towns as someone just visiting for the first time. Things have changed and yet some things have stayed the same. In imagining I've never seen these towns before, what is it I see?

Upon starting at Hastings College, I had embarked on an adventure to a small city in the middle of Nebraska. Being from Omaha, it was a culture shock. No nightlife, lack of entertainment, and minimal chain restaurants. I thought I would hate it. But, spending most of my time on campus taught me how much more important the people are—instead of all the available activities.

I have always lauded Hastings for the LACK of chain restaurants. We have the fast food explosion, but when it comes to dining, the locally owned restaurant reigns in Hastings – that is not such a bad thing. I cannot understand when people travel, why would you go to a chain restaurant when you can do this anytime?

We had been in Minnesota for just one week, for a granddaughter’s seventh birthday and an appointment, and we had had a wonderful time visiting with family and experiencing a new museum and interesting restaurants.
