Attention Kmart Shoppers…
As some of you may know, I have a second job. It’s not because I like working 60 hours a week or because I really enjoy getting a 10% discount on items like giant bags of cat food (for my aforementioned adorable cats). It’s because I have student loans. Instead of changing my email, phone number, and mailing address (that seemed a tad extreme and I really didn’t have the time to dedicate to becoming anonymous), I went out and got myself a second jobby job. Again. I’ve had a lot of jobs over the past 16 years as a career gal. In college, I always had 2 or 3 jobs, and as far as second jobs go, Kmart (the Mart as I call it) isn’t that bad.
Colorado’s Beautiful Streets and Sidewalks
I just returned from a family vacation in Colorado and spent a good deal of time looking at their fabulous streets and sidewalks. Yes, you read that right. I was in arguably one of the most beautiful states in our nation and was struck by the splendor of concrete.
Did Netflix and Redbox Kill the Video Store?
When I moved to Hastings, I was happy to discover that there wasn’t a large chain video store like Blockbuster. It brought me back to my college days in Pullman when we would go “save Video Quest.” Pullman, which was about the same size of Hastings when I lived there, boasted two Blockbusters and the locally owned Video Quest.
Hidden In Plain View
The new gallery show at Graham Gallery features an artist we haven’t seen before in this area, Patric Jernigan. He lives in Plainview, Texas. His wife has connections to a small Nebraska town, which brings them to Hastings from time to time. He liked Graham Gallery and the owner, Angela Graham, liked his art, so a show was born. It is called “The Book of Hidden Things”.

(Im)practical Magic
Don’t believe in magic? I do. The most magical thing happens when I enter a department store and–come to think of it–boutiques and other storefronts splashed with colorful displays of apparel and accessories. It always feels the same. My heart flutters a bit, there is a twinge of excitement that forces a smile and it feels like Christmas morning.

What’s Bugging Me (You) This Time?
Spring brings a fresh start to every living thing. Each part of nature, both plants and pests, puts forth her best effort to complete another life cycle. The homeowner has the option of letting nature determine the outcome or try to alter the competition between plants and pests. Homeowners have the privilege of timely use of natural, mechanical and chemical methods to alter this outcome of the phrase “green and growing or pest destroying”.

The Fong’s vs. The Slugs
For the last two years we have planted a garden. We have learned what it is like to nurture seedlings in to full grown plants. We have stood along the fence night after night surveying our crops. We have harvested baskets and baskets of tomatoes, zucchinis and cucumbers. We had not until this year experienced gardening as a full contact sport.
