YWCA Wants Your Input on July 4th Event!
For more than 35 years, the Hastings YWCA has coordinated the annual 4th of July celebration which has been held at Fisher Fountain for the past several years. It’s a fabulous event with food, fun and the ever-popular kids’ parade. More than 1,000 people attend each year. The YWCA is in the planning stages of the 2010 event—and they want to hear from you!
Here’s the question: Should the YWCA continue the tradition of holding the July 4th even at Fisher Fountain? Or should they consider another Hastings park location to better accommodate the crowd and activities?
Let us know how you feel by commenting on this post! And please respond quickly so the YWCA can continue planning this great community event. Thanks.

I think they should continue it at Fisher Fountain. It is a great setup for the kid’s parade.
I love it at the fountain. It hasn’t seemed crowded to me, and it’s a nice tradition.
I like it at the Fisher Fountain, but the crowds have outgrown the area. In the last two years, the parade has doubled back on itself. With all the activities at Brickyard, that may be a good venue for the event. Also the restrooms there would be an asset. Whatever the YW decides, we will continue to be a part of this fun event!
Last year was the first year we attended. We thought this was a great event and in a perfect spot. The only negative is parking, but that’s a minor issue when you look at how many people are able to converge in this area.
I like having the 4th at Fisher Fountain. My only concern is the parade route. If you don’t line up an hour before the parade, everyone is leaving by the time the end of the line gets started! Thanks YW for hosting an awesome event!
How about Heartwell Park? Plenty of space, picnic tables, wading pool, playground equipment. The park residents would be more than happy to host and assist with the event!
I personally love having the parade at Fisher Fountain, esp the tradition. I do know that with coordinating the parade as we get larger it gets more difficult to separate the children as they go around the fountain. I know Hastings has many great assets one esp. the parks- I love hearing the comments from everyone on this matter. Since it is such a huge event for the community, we felt it was only fitting for the community to help us decide. Keep the wonderful comments coming!
This has been such a wonderful event for so long that I hate the thought of moving it away from Fisher Fountain, but it may be time. I think that Lib’s Park could be an excellent location for the event! The waterworks and the Born Learning Trail would offer additional entertainment for the families attending and the parade could go around the park and still be visible!
I’ve never attended the parade honestly, but I just moved back to Hastings and will definitely be attending it this year as I have a little one now. From what I’ve heard Fisher Fountain is great and of course it’s kind of a landmark in Hastings. Hence..our logo. But I’ve always loved Heartwell Park. It’s larger with a longer area and concrete for a longer parade..which means more people can sit comfortably and watch, and yes, there is a lot of things for kids to play on, ducks, restrooms, water fountains, trees, running space. I think Heartwell would be great.
New this year will be the street closings around the fountain area at noon just before the Parade starts (Safer for the Kids during the Parade). The band and Parade leaders will go arond the fountain several times until everyone has had a chance to do their Parade lap. You will also be able to park on both sides of North Hastings Avenue between 12th and the Fire Station. The No parking signs on the West side will be covered from 10AM until 1:30PM. Hastings Utilities keeps this wonderful Fountain area maintained just for the enjoyment of our community and we hope the organizers will continue to find this the best location on the 4th of July.
