It’s Game Time
If you’re anything like me, I have always wanted to appear on a game show. Yeah, I’d enjoy “Wheel of Fortune” or “The Price is Right” (despite Bob Barker’s departure), but the true test of game show mastery would be a winning on a quiz show, like “Cash Cab” or “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” Not only do both of these game shows take place within “The Big Apple” but they also cover a wide variety of topics.
So how does a game show lover live big outside of New York City? The answer is quite simple: Pub Quiz. Twice a month, Hastings Public Library holds a trivia-based quiz at local pubs for prizes. Small groups compete each second Wednesday or final Thursday at Keno and Murphy’s (respectively). Each team answers 30 questions either spanning a variety of topics or covering just one. The excitement and camaraderie from each quiz is a great way to live big and enjoy what Hastings has to offer. Plus, if your team does win the whole thing, you may receive a gift card to pay for your drinks.
One Thursday evening last summer, my group played a special ‘90s edition of Pub Quiz. We answered 30 questions involving sports, pop culture, fads, and more from the 1990’s. We were sure we had done quite well—and we had—but it ended up that we and another group needed to have a tie-breaker. For the win, we had to name all of the Spice Girls & Backstreet Boys. Needless to say, I was no help and we ended up taking second place. Second was a harsh mistress and we have yet to receive the grand prize. Next time…
At any rate, those of you game show lovers: Try a Pub Quiz. It is absolutely free to play, fun, and informative if you don’t know the answers. I would recommend it since I attend anytime I do not have to work. The questions may even be good practice for any of you, like I, who want to appear on a game show. I certainly used it as practice for my audition to appear on “Who Wants to be a Millionaire?” But that’s still to come…
