Stairs

Stairs have taken on a new meaning for me lately. Last November my friend Jackie and I signed up for Trek up the Tower. It’s a vertical race up 40 flights of stairs, 870 individual steps and 633 feet in the sky, it’s in the First National Tower in Omaha on February 25. So needless to say, I’ve been running a lot of stairs.

Running stairs is actually a great workout and is one of my favorite workouts. In college when we were in pre-season training, we would run the Hastings College Football Stadium stairs for a workout every now and then. It’s a great cardio workout and is super for your legs! I only wish I was in college basketball shape now!

When I signed up for the race 40 flights, 870 steps & 633 feet really didn’t seem that bad…boy was I wrong! I’ve been running stairs fairly consistently since the beginning of January and I still don’t feel like I’m in good enough shape for this race. It’s hard to find stairs to run in Central Nebraska without going up and down a million times, but that’s what I have been doing and surprisingly I’m not sick of it yet.

So, until February 26 I’ll be running up…and down every flight of stairs I see! Wish me luck!

  1. You have the right idea kid. I do the same thing to train for this event, up and down the stairs. It works pretty well. Good luck on Saturday. You will do great!
