The Hastings Public Library is Super Rad!
Books are amazing. I have a mini 3 ring notebook left over from college with a list of books categorized by subject that I want to read. I know. Totally nerdy, but it feeds my love of organization and reading, so I’m happy. I also carry a list of books in my wallet that I know the library has, just in case I have a free moment to pop by and check out a book.
The day after I moved here – literally – I went to the library to get my library card. I didn’t have anything with my address on it, so I had to have my landlord type up a letter saying I did indeed live at the Chateau. The library lets you read books for FREE! Or you can check out movies…for FREE! I don’t think enough people use the library. Why in the heck would I buy a novel that I will only read once when I can borrow it for free? There are thousands and thousands of titles waiting patiently for you to check them out.
I can never just check out one book and it is never just a quick errand to for me. I always get sidetracked and check out way too many books for that short 3 week period. But they were free and I can always renew.
I also love the fact that I get an email reminder the day before my books are due. It definitely helps cut down on those 25 cent fines I accrue. If I request a book, I get an email letting me know my book is in. I am sure other libraries besides Hastings offer this, but it makes book borrowing that much easier.
I use the library a lot for work. I have found that the best way to start researching a topic I know nothing about is to see if there is a children’s book on that subject. You get a brief overview, which often times points you in the right direction for more in-depth research. Every time I go into the library with a question (which is often), I am helped by a friendly employee. The librarians are great resources and are very patient. I research some odd topics, yet they always have a suggestion about where to start.
If I do buy books, I’m not picky about where I get them. I prefer used books to new books. They are cheaper and I feel like I am giving them a second life. I could spend all day in a used book store. Or even a new book store for that matter. I’ve acquired some great books at garage sales and thrift stores like Goodwill. I especially love the book sale that the Friends of the Hastings Public Library hosts every year. It’s a book lover’s paradise and the money goes to a great cause…a double whammy!
The Hastings Public Library is super rad, so go check it out. Pun intended.
