The Hastings Public Library is Super Rad!

artimg1Books are amazing. I have a mini 3 ring notebook left over from college with a list of books categorized by subject that I want to read. I know. Totally nerdy, but it feeds my love of organization and reading, so I’m happy. I also carry a list of books in my wallet that I know the library has, just in case I have a free moment to pop by and check out a book.

The day after I moved here – literally – I went to the library to get my library card. I didn’t have anything with my address on it, so I had to have my landlord type up a letter saying I did indeed live at the Chateau. The library lets you read books for FREE! Or you can check out movies…for FREE! I don’t think enough people use the library. Why in the heck would I buy a novel that I will only read once when I can borrow it for free? There are thousands and thousands of titles waiting patiently for you to check them out.

artimg3I can never just check out one book and it is never just a quick errand to for me. I always get sidetracked and check out way too many books for that short 3 week period. But they were free and I can always renew.

I also love the fact that I get an email reminder the day before my books are due. It definitely helps cut down on those 25 cent fines I accrue. If I request a book, I get an email letting me know my book is in. I am sure other libraries besides Hastings offer this, but it makes book borrowing that much easier.

I use the library a lot for work. I have found that the best way to start researching a topic I know nothing about is to see if there is a children’s book on that subject. You get a brief overview, which often times points you in the right direction for more in-depth research. Every time I go into the library with a question (which is often), I am helped by a friendly employee. The librarians are great resources and are very patient. I research some odd topics, yet they always have a suggestion about where to start.

artimg2If I do buy books, I’m not picky about where I get them. I prefer used books to new books. They are cheaper and I feel like I am giving them a second life. I could spend all day in a used book store. Or even a new book store for that matter. I’ve acquired some great books at garage sales and thrift stores like Goodwill. I especially love the book sale that the Friends of the Hastings Public Library hosts every year. It’s a book lover’s paradise and the money goes to a great cause…a double whammy!

The Hastings Public Library is super rad, so go check it out. Pun intended.
