The Positive Side of School

While enjoying lunch at Applebee’s on Sunday, my mom asked me what I was going to blog about this week. I gave her the usual answer I have until I start hitting keys on the keyboard, “I don’t know.” She followed by giving me a hard time saying I would probably write about how awful school is for the umpteenth time.

Well, here I am – to prove my mom wrong. I admit, I have been very opposed to my education, but I’m not oblivious to the fact that an exemplary high school education is, indeed, necessary and worth it. Yes, that was just typed by a 17-year old kid.

First of all, school is great if you make it great. The same goes for school stinks if you make it stinky. Bottom line: it’s all about your mental attitude. Before you call me a hypocrite, let me say my past blogs featuring pessimism towards school were based solely on entertainment purposes (I hope you were entertained). I actually love school. School gives me an excuse to see my friends (or friend), buy new clothes and shoes, and not sit at home on the couch all day. Quite truthfully, August through May would be absolutely boring and dreadful without spending at least 7 out of 24 hours at school.

I googled (yes, that’s a verb) “difference between high school dropout and college graduate,” and I found a very appalling statistic. You may have heard a stat similar to this, but on average a high school dropout will earn $18,734. Now, take that number and compare it to the college graduate with a hard-earned bachelor’s degree that earns $51,206. Subtract those numbers and you find a $32,472 difference. I think taking school seriously is definitely worth that extra dough in my pocket. Obviously, school has its cons, but if an extra $32,472 isn’t a good enough reason to stick to the books then I have zero hope for humanity.
