Exceeding Entertainment Expectations

During my tenure at Lochland Country Club, I have learned the club and staff always try to exceed expectations in every possible way. As Dining Room Manager, I spend many evenings trying to exceed member expectations. I accept that I can rarely have evenings off – especially Fridays and Saturdays. Therefore, I either make other arrangements for recreation or make my own fun. Often, it is the latter, and so I have learned to enjoy the myriad of activities the club has to offer. It is similar to an active consumer, making the best of what is offered. The club does have quite a few events to keep me at least slightly entertained:

Spring: Seafood Night, Easter Brunch, Father-Daughter Ball, Mixology Night, Golf Leagues

Summer: Wine & Beer Tasting, 3rd of July Extravaganza, Pizza at the Pool, Member Car Show

Fall: Ballroom Dance Lessons, Symphony on the Green, Presidents Ball, Serenade Supper

Winter: Lighting of the Club, Santa Brunch, Asian Gourmet Night, 4-Course Valentine Dinner

In addition, I have even gotten to make club events – for example, the Serenade Supper. Ten musicians, including myself, wanted the members to “live big” with an evening of gourmet dining and semi-professional entertainment from Hastings College students. It may not be the Omaha Community Playhouse but it is the best singers from the college. We served each course and performed various musical acts while the members enjoyed their meal! Many still talk about it to this day as it had exceeded all of our expectations.

Gourmet meals, wine tastings, musical entertainment and more tend to exceed all of my expectations for entertainment at work. Being a part of these special events, while still getting paid, makes it a little less aggravating – and even a bit more enjoyable – to work weekends at the club. Apply it to your life to transform an ordinary or mundane time to do something into a more pleasurable experience. It makes the time go by much faster!

About the author: Josh Wooster

I was born and raised in Omaha, Nebraska, where I attended Millard West High School. I chose Hastings College because it gave students personal attention, extracurricular options, and music ensembles better than those of other colleges in the state. I am currently the leader of 1-2-5, the men’s a-cappella singing ensemble, while also being a part of the Hastings College Choir and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, the men’s music fraternity. Other commitments include being an intern for the Hastings Chamber of Commerce and membership in the Student Environmental Action Coalition and Society for Collegiate Journalists. “Free time” for me involves arranging music for 1-2-5, working at the Lochland Country Club, and searching for a job. I am a jovial spirit with a diligent attitude towards work, and a keen eye for detail. I hope to stick around Hastings after college to work and give back to the city and college that have offered me so much.
