4th of July at Fisher Fountain

img1I’m not sure when the YWCA started holding their Independence Day celebration at Fisher Fountain, but I sure wish it had been going on when our two were little. On the other hand, maybe it’s even more fun to attend and take in the festivities without finding costumes, decorating the tricycles or wagons, and figuring out whether the pet should be in the parade.

It’s a little hard to explain why a really short parade of children dressed up for the 4th of July is such a kick, but it truly is. But…if you plan to attend, don’t even think about getting there right at 12:30, when the parade starts….it’s all over very quickly, and you can’t be a minute late. By arriving early, you get to watch as proud parents organize their families into parade-worthy groups, and you might even have an opportunity to help capture a wayward pet.

img2The creativity of Hastings parents for the parade is amazing….watch for Uncle Sam, the Statue of Liberty, pioneers, and more, most of whom might be riding bicycles or carrying a family pet. Sure, it’s an historical stretch, but just think of the memories being created.

If you’ve never attended this great community event, you’re in for a pleasant surprise. This year 4th of July comes on a Sunday, so there will be a Sunday service at the fountain at 10:30, followed by the food and games at 11 AM, and the parade at 12:30.

There’s such a festive air at this celebration, and nary a loud firecracker. Which, to my mind, is a great benefit. The fountain itself provides a familiar background for the festivities, and the park is shady and pleasant.

img3Grab your lawn chair, take just a little cash for the lemonade and hot dogs (and the raffle, if you like), and take advantage of yet another free entertainment for all ages. You’ll have a chance to visit with friends you haven’t seen in awhile, and it’s great fun to watch the kids’ games and face-painting.

Oh, and if you want to donate a baked good or raffle item, or volunteer at the event, you can email teresalindsay@yahoo.com.

I hope to see you there!

  1. The 4th of July Parade is one of those things that makes Hastings…Hastings. It’s a quaint, small-town kind of thing that just makes you happy. And here’s to a wonderful man who played Uncle Sam (growing the beard out every year for authenticity)…we all miss you, Craig Kinnaman!
