Summer is in full force at the Higel household. Softball and t-ball are done for the season which means more time ’round the campfire, lakeside and in our own back yard.

Panini’s…A Summer Favorite!
Monday, June 20th, 2011 by Lindsay Higel
My latest kitchen appliance purchase was made recently here in Hastings. After a few weeks of trials and taste tests, I am very happy to report that this applicance will stay in the kitchen and not be down-graded to the upper cabinets in the laundry room. The Panini Maker has been out on the counter since its purchase from Walmart two weeks ago. It is very versitle, not just yeilding ooey, gooey Paninis and Sandwiches, but is great for grilling meats and vegetables.

Bountiful Harvest to Delicious Salad
Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 by Lindsay Higel
With a few 90 degree days this month, we have spring (and even summer) thoughts in the air. We planted some things in our garden early this year. But held off on many as there is always a chance for that last freeze. As it turned out, I am really glad we did. My mom has always said to wait until May 15th to get plants in the garden, as she again, was right.

Eggs to “Dye” For
Tuesday, May 17th, 2011 by Lindsay Higel
This Easter “Go Green”….or yellow, blue or pink. Steer your cart not to “Bunny-land”, you know, the isle filled with more fake grass than the Astrodome, Cadbury Eggs by the million-dozen and the ever popular, Dudley’s Easter Egg Dyeing Kits complete with not-so-handy metal dipper, but rather….to the produce section.

It’s a Chili Day
Wednesday, April 27th, 2011 by Judy Sandeen
Last week, during what I foolishly thought was the last cold and snowy day of spring, I found myself making a big pot of chili. My cooking instincts don’t kick in all that often, but changes in weather bring out something pretty basic in me, and on those chilly and snowy days, chili just has to happen.

Reuben Show Down…The Best of the Best
Monday, March 28th, 2011 by Lindsay Higel
As the years roll on, and this once 20 something, is now entering her thirties, the quest to find the best green beer in Hastings is behind me. A St. Patty’s day tradition for a number of years, this March brought a new challenge to the Irish Holiday. Not wanting to abandon the festivities completely, I had another mission in mind. I was on an adventure to find the best Reuben in town.
